Did a spark just flair in your mind? Are you, right now, thinking “Do these cats know about the Catholic Worker movement?” Yes we do! Dorthy Day & Peter Maurin are guiding stars for us as we live deeper into our faith and work to build a more just, caring and peaceful society.
The Weed Worker is my sister Wendy’s favorite tool; she is actually the inspiration for us designing and making it! And not to brag, but she has been gardening longer than I’ve been alive, and I don’t want to blow her cover, but let’s just say she is an octogenarian who still gets after it and with decades of experience this is the tool she most likes in her hand.
The Weed Worker is one of our own designs. It is a close cousin to an asian hand cycle or Cape Cod Weeder, crossed with a shuffle hoe (aka dutch hoe, oscillating hoe, hula hoe). Similar tools have been used around the world and have so many names because of its ubiquity and versatility. It can be used to dig out deep tap roots or pushed and pulled just under the surface of the soil to free up shallow growing weeds. It has a tapered point and sharp edges on both sides, like a dagger. Every Weeder is stamped with an olive branch, the RAWtools South “maker's mark” and sometimes with the maker's mark of the blacksmith who hammered it out for you. We sand and polish the heads then treat both the metal and wood with the RAWtools South secret blend of Blacksmith Budder™.
